Where Are The Jobs? Am I Employable?

A Job Search Report is suitable for four types of client:

  • Applicants languishing in the Skills Matching Database who wish to attract sponsorship to get out of the pool.
  • Applicants for Skilled Regional Sponsored visa 475/487
  • Applicants for Skilled Sponsored visa 176 (especially IT occupations) and
  • Anyone who wants detailed information on the jobs market for their chosen occupation and chosen area to live.

The Job Search Report generates evidence of employer interest in the skilled migrant, without the accompaniment of job interviews and starting dates. The employer’s written support, or job offer, should be enough to trigger State sponsorship.

The State Governments will examine the accompanying research into the needs for a migrant’s skills, information about local opportunities for relevant employment plus the employer’s willingness to sponsor a migrant.

Letters of support from various organisations and professional associations are also available for an additional fee.

Please note that some States require a job offer for IT occupations on Regional visas, so an expression of employer interest will not be enough.

We think the pool of people in the Skills Matching Database are not assisted by weak employer knowledge of this resource, thanks to poor marketing effort by DIAC and somewhat inconsistent support from State Governments.

The best strategy is to avoid “slipping into the pool” is by gaining a job offer or attracting State and employer sponsorship at the first step.

The Australian Government is now in caretaker mode ahead of the national election scheduled for August 21. The timing is very unfortunate as a long series of major changes to immigration policy are still unfinished, leaving many thousands of people in a state of great uncertainty.

Although it is possible that State Governments may be able to submit their new lists of State Sponsored occupations for Ministerial approval, it is unclear whether the Minister still has the ability to authorise their implementation at least until a new Government is formed. Similarly, other unwelcome legislation for capping and ceasing certain visa categories is also unable to progress. Another choke point is that quotas for certain occupations may also be implemented at State and Federal levels soon after the election.

Or not! One major party view is that smaller employers should find it easier to become a sponsor, which would enable many more job applicants through. Applicants affected by change and uncertainty may still consider applying for 457 permits until their visa pathway for permanent residency is made clear. Even without the election, Immigration is in a bit of a mess and it will probably be October before it’s mostly cleared up.
